Mobile terms glossary
Dual-SIM - As a SIM links a phone to a specific carrier (service provider), billing account, and phone number, a dual-SIM phone can be linked to two different phone numbers associated with two different billing accounts. Those accounts and phone numbers can be with different carriers, and even in different countries.
One common use is to use one phone with both a business phone number (and account and a separate personal line. Another use is to have accounts with carriers in two different countries, in order to take advantage of favorable rates for local versus international calls, or to permit favorable rates for people calling you, by have local phone numbers in two countries.
GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communication and is the most popular 2G mobile phone standard in the world.
GSM is used by about 80% of all mobile phones - approximately 2 billion people across more than 212 countries.
The widespread use of the GSM standard has made it easy for most mobile phone users to use their phones overseas thanks to roaming agreements between operators using the same GSM standard.
GSM - then labelled Groupe Spécial Mobile was originally conceived back in 1982 as a European standard for mobile phones. The first GSM network went live in 1992 in Finland.
GSM introduced the concept of the SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module card) - a detachable smart card that lets users swap their phone number and contacts between handset.
3G - Analog cellular phones were the first generation while digital marked the second generation.3G is loosely defined, but generally includes high data speeds, always-on data access, and greater voice capacity.
The high data speeds are possibly the most prominent feature, and certainly the most hyped. They enable such advanced features as live, streaming video.
There are several different 3G technology standards. The most prevalent is UMTS, which is based on WCDMA (the terms WCDMA and UMTS are often used interchangeably).
The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is a specialized circuit designed to accelerate the image output in a frame buffer intended for output to a display.
GPUs are very efficient at manipulating computer graphics and are generally more effective than general-purpose CPUs for algorithms where processing of large blocks of data is done in parallel.
Modern smartphones are equipped with advanced embedded chipsets that can do many different tasks depending on their programming. GPUs are an essential part of those chipsets and as mobile games are pushing the boundaries of their capabilities, the GPU performance is becoming increasingly important.
Sony Xperia Xz2 Premium Specs
Bluetooth is a low-power wireless networking technology operating in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. There are two classes of Bluetooth device — Class 1 devices have higher output power and a range of about 100 meters, and Class 2 devices have lower power and a range of about 10 meters. Bluetooth enables ad hoc networking of up to eight devices (supporting voice and data). The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was founded in 1998 by IBM, Intel, Ericsson, Nokia and Toshiba, and is supported by more than 2,500 organizations. The Bluetooth v.1.0 specification was ratified and published in 1999 and supported data rates of up to 1Mbps. Bluetooth Version 2.1, along with its enhanced data rate (EDR) specification, was ratified in March 2007, supporting data rates of up to 3 Mbps, and simplified “pairing” — the process used for securely linking one Bluetooth device to another. It also reduced power consumption, doubling the battery life of headsets and other mobile devices for which the Bluetooth radio consumes a large percentage of the power budget. Version 3.0 (“Seattle”) was adopted by the SIG in April 2009, and the specification included Wi-Fi as an alternative transport layer for large volumes of data, supporting data rates of up to 24 Mbps. The SIG also adopted “Bluetooth low energy,” a new ultra-low-power variant, previously referred to as Ultra Low Power (ULP) Bluetooth and Wibree.
GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service and was the first popular data standard for mobile phones.
GPRS was used for WAP and MMS messages and offered modest connection speeds - typically 30-40 Kbit/s, although the theoretical maximum is 115 Kbit/s. GPRS is known as a 2.5G technology.
One of the early advantages of GPRS is that it s always on so no connection handshake is needed. It is still very popular, especially in the developing world.
The name of EDGE in full is Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. This is a 2.75G technology further developed from the 2G and 2.5G technologies. Its data transmission speed is higher than that of GPRS and is closer to 3G technology.
Wi-Fi is a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) technology. It provides short-range wireless high-speed data connections between mobile data devices (such as laptops, PDAs or phones) and nearby Wi-Fi access points (special hardware connected to a wired network).
The older variant of Wi-Fi, 802.11g, is capable of providing speeds of up to 54Mbps and is backwards compatible with 802.11b (providing up to 11Mbps).
The more recent standard is called 802.11n (offering speeds of up to 150Mbps per channel or up to 600Mbps in total). It can be used in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency bands, though a receiver needs to have dual-band antenna to operate on both.
DLNA refers to both an organization and the technology they created. The DLNA standard is used for sharing music, photos and video over an existing home network. For example, by using DLNA you could stream video from your phone to a compatible TV-set using a Wi-Fi network.
Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a serial bus standard to interface computer peripherals. USB is quickly replacing the need for serial and parallel ports to interface devices.
HDMI - Stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. HDMI is a digital interface for transmitting audio and video data in a single cable. It is supported by most HDTVs and related components, such as DVD and Blu-ray players, cable boxes, and video game systems.

alienufoweird, 27 Jan 2019Everyone is saying that but my cousin has a Mate 20 Pro and I put them side by side taking nig.. moreI'm coming from a lot of Xperia flagship before switch to Huawei. No, no matter what, Mate 20 camera are superior than XZ2 premium in many aspects, be it low lights or daylight. In fact, manual mod on Mate 20 are more advance than Xperia. U cant beat physics, Mate 20 pro camera sensor are bigger, and even vanilla Mate 20 has the same camera sensor size as XZ2 premium, its pixel size are bigger at 1.6 micron than 1.22 micron inside XZ2 Premium.
Are u aware that Mate 20 Master AI 2.0 didnt oversaturate colors anymore? Unlike the previous P20 Pro. And on my observation, only normal XZ2 retains natural colors. Starts from XZ2 Premium & XZ3, they add a bit of vibrancy to colors. But it still not far off from natural. Accept it, & looks like next XZ4 camera might be a game changer from Sony.

Its been killed by Huawei Mate 20 Pro. - https://youtu.be/r79XDAJkFP8 You cant.. moreEveryone is saying that but my cousin has a Mate 20 Pro and I put them side by side taking night pictures and videos and the xz2p always comes on top so either his phone has a bad sensor or you're all so biased towards Sony that it hurts. Online comparisons shows the same things plus the xz2p has natural colors and not that oversaturated bullshit.

You cant beat physics. Bigger camera sensor & bigger pixel size are always better, not to mention manual mod on Huawei's phone are a lot better, including 40mp resolution RAW support.
Lets wait for the next XZ4, wether its any good or not. But by then, P30 Pro will came out as well, & definitely will improve the already excellent low light shooter Mate 20 Pro has.

Charles, 11 Jan 2019Hello, i just got my sony xperia xz2 premium and this phone is a beast ! anyway, i ran the ant.. moreBenchmarks are not accurate tests. Do this charge your phone to max and do a battery test then discharge it to half and do another then another at full charge and see if you get consistent numbers which you'll probably won't since benchmarks are not 100% accurate and have a huge margin of error so don't rely on them too much. Befor android pie this phone was ranked in the double digits on antutu benchmark and now after it's on 6th place so software also plays a part on benchmarks.

Anonymous, 12 Jan 2019I had XZ2 premium but its screen burns in only after 3 months of usage and its glass back has .. moreWhat are you on about ? Burn in on an lcd screen in 3 months ? Did you used it next to a flame or in the desert for hours to get that ? It's a ridiculous claim but if it is true then please provide pictures so we can see what state your device is in. Hou can the usb brake if it is baked into the chassis ? It is impossible to brake this unintentionally. 0 issues since launch it actually got faster with android 9 and then you went and bought an amoled screen phone which will DEFINITELY get burn in after a year so good luck with that. Either you got an S9 instead of this which got burn in since samsung phone do that after a while so now you're butt hurt talking shit or you're the unluckiest man to own a sony device. Using this phone since November and had 0 issues.

I had XZ2 premium but its screen burns in only after 3 months of usage and its glass back has hairline cracks even though I didn't drop it a single time. And then USBC port breaks. There are many issues to own a sony device. I bough S9 plus and not a single issue and very happy with it.

Anonymous, 16 Dec 2018Guys, i just bought this phone, xz2 premium, android ver 8.0.0, internet said that the iso for.. moreHey, i just did some tests on mine and i can explain what's going on : apparently sony won't let you manually increase the iso on the camera maybe from fear of burning the sensor or breaking something (people are stupid and pointing the sensor to the sun with this setting might burn the sensor or maybe cause other problems) so in manual mode the maximum iso available is 12800 from what i can tell BUT if you take pictures in auto and the ,high sensitivity mode, kicks in the iso goes up to 51200 iso depending on how dark it is and you can see this by taking several pictures in pitch dark area and looking at their properties.
As for the video maybe it's the same deal but i can't tell since the properties of the file on the phone doesn't show the iso but you can take a video in pitch black conditions and transfer it to a pc and check for yourself also there is no pro mode for video just auto so you can't change the iso as you please. Hope this explanation helps and all i can say is that i compared this camera against a p20pro and a mate20pro plus an iphone and it bested them in most cases especially in low light conditions so just enjoy the phone and use the camera as it because it's a great camera overall.

HugoSteger, 20 Dec 2018But with low internal storage, no headphone jacks, and no better screen refresh rate. I don't .. moreWhat better features do other smartphones have ? This is more than enough for a normal consumer like me that isn't a photographer and has a regular pc to download the pictures and videos i take on an hdd or just put them on the cloud, i got a 256GB sd card with some 4K hdr movies on it in case i'm bored wherever i go either on vacation or just around town, i actually wrecked my S8 headphone jack because of my job (it got filled with gunk and it eventually broke and was unusable so no HJ is a plus for me), i don't play games so the refresh rate would be useless (a welcomed feature but useless for me nonetheless). It comes down to personal preference and i personally love this device, it has a great screen, a battery that lasts me all day, some heft to it so i can feel it in my pocket and not wonder where it is plus it's loud AF when compared to other flagships like the P20pro, Mate20pro, iphone etc. Plus even if i don't take allot of pictures but when i need it this camera is the best camera on any phone i've seen including the above mentioned which i was able to compare it with and it took waaay better pictures even with less megapixels. It comes down to personal preference in the end plus i love that it has no notch and a flat screen since before this i had the samsung S8 and got annoyed with that screen in the long run, i don't particularly like curved screens or notches and amoled screen have too much color plus the burn in effect which i previously got on my S8 after 1 year of normal use which was another factor that pushed me towards this device.

I don't see why having a 4k display, night camera, and even having front facing speaker makes this thing a premium device. Meanwhile, other flagships offer more features that are more important than what the XZ2 premium has.
